Passion for Science

What drives our researchers? Meet the DTU Wind Energy people in this series about our passion for wind energy science and technology

Head of Section, Katherine Dykes, on her passion for science, especially systems engineering with wind energy

"🍃 I’m a systems engineer, and that means that I really get drawn to working with complex systems that involve a lot of different physical areas, so coupling many different physics and engineering sciences together. So what really attracts me and others who work with me to wind energy is the ability to pull together all these different physical phenomena the aerodynamics, the structures, the electrical, the controls, and look at the whole system perspective so we can improve the whole system performance, reduce the costs, and ultimately make wind energy one of the most competitive energy generation sources in the planet."

Professor Henrik Bredmose on his passion for science, especially for floating offshore wind

"🍃 I’m excited by having these big turbines in the waters, on a floater in big waves, with forces, splash, damping – It is for me super exciting."

Professor Jens Nørkær Sørensen on his passion for science, especially the aerodynamics on turbine blades

"💡 Aerodynamics is fascinating. Just the facts that they can fly. Also, you can see that your research can really help the green transition."

Professor Charlotte Hasager on her passion for science, especially atmospheric science

"Offshore wind energy will stay niche. That was what people said to Charlotte Hasager many years ago when she started to look into it: “Play with it if you like, but it’s not serious research and won’t last. Yet, offshore wind has grown to become a critical energy source."
